Oshawa eyes new north-end grocery store

Oshawa has received an application for a new grocery store complex in the city’s north-end, but will have to amend its zoning bylaws to allow it. The city will be hosting a public meeting April 11 for feedback from the community on whether to let it go ahead.
The application concerns 991 Taunton Road East, home to a plaza of numerous stores, banks and restaurants. Owners SmartREIT (Oshawa North) Inc. wish to add a supermarket to the plaza, and have submitted an application to amend Oshawa’s zoning to allow it.
Specifically they want amendments to the Pinecrest Part II Plan of the Oshawa Official Plan, which oversees the plaza, to include a supermarket as a permitted use. Additionally, SmartREIT needs a change to Zoning By-law 60-94 with the same effect.
The potential supermarket would occupy existing commercial space meaning minimal construction would be required.
The prospective new grocer would be right across the street from the Taunton Rd Real Canadian Superstore and just around the corner from the Harmony Rd Walmart Superstore.

The city has determined the application process is complete, and now need to consult the public before rendering a decision. A public meeting will be held next month to discuss the proposed amendments.
The meeting will be held in-person at the Oshawa City Hall at 50 Centre Street South. Delegates can speak to Council electronically as well, but must submit a request to City Clerk Services at [email protected] by 4:30 p.m. April 6.
Letter can be submitted as well. They must be addressed to Robert Bedic, Oshawa City Hall, 50 Centre Street South, Oshawa, Ontario L1H 3Z7 or by telephone at 905-436-3311, extension 2401 or by email to [email protected]. Bedic will need to receive the correspondence by April 5 to go on the agenda. Any letters received later will be presented at the meeting.
The meeting will take place on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. Those unable to attend in person can also watch the meeting online through Oshawa’s website.
