Oshawa-based aircraft crashes in western NY, killing two

A small plane based out of the Oshawa Executive Airport crashed shortly after takeoff from the Chautauqua County Jamestown Airport in western New York Tuesday, killing the pilot and his lone passenger.
The victims have been identified as Roger Ryall, 52, of Toronto, the pilot, and British Columbia resident David Hughes.
The aircraft, a single-engine Cirrus SR22, had stopped at an airport in Erie, Pa., just 80 kilometres away before landing in Jamestown for re-fuelling. Witnesses say the plane crashed just ten minutes after it was airborne again.
Sheriff James Quattrone told The Post-Journal of Jamestown there was no indication the pilot called for help. During a press briefing outside the airport terminal, Quattrone said it was apparent the Cirrus SR-22 had experienced “some type of catastrophic failure.”
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, he added.
According to Buffalo’s WIVB channel 4, the plane was headed back to Ontario to Waterloo when it crashed just before 2 p.m., with the full fuel tank erupting into a ball of fire on impact.
