Oshawa’s centennial has been marked by several special events already, with more to come, and Oshawa Animal Services joined in the celebration this week with the adoption of its 100th animal, an adorable three-and-a-half-old lab/poodle cross named Miles.

The fur baby adoption – to lifelong dog lover Diane – is also a celebration of the community’s commitment to animal welfare and the success of the City’s adoption programs.

Oshawa Animal Services sponsored the adoption and as the city continues its centennial party the group is “looking forward” to finding more loving homes for animals in need.

In addition to the milestone adoption, Oshawa Animal Services launched a new program in March called Doggy Day Out, providing the opportunity for residents who perhaps don’t have the means to adopt a dog full-time to take a long-stay shelter dog for a day to experience life outside the shelter.

This initiative provides valuable insights into the dogs’ personalities and generates videos and pictures to promote and find the best match for each dog. Doggy Day Out, inspired by a previous shelter dog Dory, also offers an opportunity for people unable to permanently adopt a dog to enjoy a furry friend’s companionship for a day.

Since the program started Oshawa Animal Services has organized multiple Doggy Day Out events. Learn more about how you can get involved.

Animal Services found forever homes for 1,019 animals last year, a new record. Another 2023 highlight was hosting two pet wellness days, with the assistance of the Oshawa Animal Care Advisory Committee, that provided veterinary care for 150 animals who otherwise may not have had access to such services.
