Ontario is reporting almost 1,100 people in hospital with COVID-19 for a nearly 40 per cent spike in case numbers from one week ago.

The province says there were 790 people in hospital with the virus last Tuesday compared to 1,091 people in hospital with COVID-19 as of April 5.

That number includes 173 patients with the virus in intensive care compared with 165 patients a week ago.

There has also been an increase in the number of children in hospital with the virus, with the province reporting some 87 kids in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19.

There are six new COVID-19 deaths logged today, and three that the province says occurred more than a week ago have been added to the total count.

Ontario is also reporting 1,991 new infections across the province, though officials say the real number of new cases could be up to 10 times higher due to limited access to PCR.

Eighteen per cent of COVID-19 tests conducted in the last day came back positive, down slightly from Monday’s positivity rate of 19 per cent.

The Region of Peel reported 450 new COVID-19 cases across Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon on Monday. Those numbers include cases recorded since Friday, April 1.
