A big change will soon be coming to Ontario classrooms.

According to a recent CBC article, later this week Ontario will be announcing that cellphones will be banned in classrooms. This ban is expected to come into effect during the next school year.

The ban, according to the article, would forbid cellphone use during instructional time.

“The Canadian Press has learned some schools already have similar policies, but the province will issue a directive to all public schools for the 2019-20 school year,” reads the article.

However, it was also noted that there will be exceptions to this ban.

“Government sources who were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the announcement say exceptions would be made for when teachers want to use cellphones as part of their lesson, for medical reasons and students with special needs,” notes the article.

Although Ontario will soon be making this announcement, enforcement of the ban would still up to individual boards and schools.

We will provide updates as they become available.
