Hotel fight and robbery leads to charge for Brampton suspect

Provincial police have charged a Toronto Police Service officer from Brampton with theft, obstruction, and breach of trust following an “on-duty incident” last year.

The OPP says an investigation into allegations made against a Toronto police officer started in July 2024. The TPS Professional Standards Unit was initially in charge of the investigation, which was handed over to the OPP in January.

The OPP says a 38-year-old officer with the Toronto Police Service and a resident of Brampton with multiple offences.

Brian Sukhram, 38, of Brampton has been charged with breach of trust, obstruct justice, theft over $5,000, and theft under $5,000, the OPP says.

He was charged last year with multiple offences following a call about a possible impaired driver in Mississauga.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and “multiple” Peel Police cruisers were damaged, police said. Two officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

He was suspended without pay as per the Community Safety and Policing Act, TPS says.

At the time of his arrest last year, Sukhram was a detective constable assigned to the Drug Squad unit, a plainclothes officer and a 13-year veteran of the force.

Anyone with information about this incident can contact the OPP by calling 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.

When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, never have to testify, and could receive a $2,000 reward.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story stated Sukhram was suspended with pay. TPS says he was suspended without pay as per the Community Safety and Policing Act.
