Oakville urging Region of Halton to impose a bylaw requiring residents to wear masks

Oakville Town Council has passed a motion requesting the Region of Halton implement a bylaw that would require citizens to wear a non-medical mask or face covering.

Oakville Town Council has passed a motion requesting the Region of Halton implement a bylaw that would require citizens to wear a non-medical mask or face covering.

The motion, which passed unanimously, comes after many cities have implemented such bylaws, including Mississauga, Brampton, and Toronto.

The motion reference the fact masks and face coverings have been credited with reducing the potential to contract and spread COVID-19 when physical distancing measures are difficult to abide by—such as inside enclosed spaces.

The motion further stated that masks can help prevent people who contract the virus but are asymptomatic from unknowingly spreading it.

“I believe that what we’re doing is prudent, as we look to the South and we see what happened when people became very incautious when they reopened,” Mayor Rob Burton said in a tweet in reference to the motion.
