Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Town Council are inviting you and your family to celebrate the kick off of Black History Month.

This year’s flag raising event is scheduled for next Tuesday (Jan. 31) from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at Town Hall.

Organizations invited to the festivities include the African Caribbean Council of Halton, Black Mentorship Inc., BLing Events International Entertainment, Halton Black History Awareness Society and the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton.

Oakville’s diversity continues to grow with 41.2 per cent of the population made up of immigrants, according to the 2021 Census. Some 1,505 new residents were added to the existing black community.

“Our diversity and experiences make our Town a leading

economic engine and one of the world’s most diverse and livable communities,” said a news release from Mayor Burton’s office. “As the 25th largest city in Canada, Oakville is a global leader in technology, finance, culture, and innovation.

“It consistently places at the top of international rankings due to investments championed by its government, residents, and businesses.”

Town Hall is located at 1225 Trafalgar Road.
