A rainbow of colours will fill the halls on Wednesday at Catholic schools in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills.

Students at Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) schools are being asked to wear their brightest colours for Rainbow Day in celebration of the first day of Pride Month.

June is Pride Month in Canada and throughout the month HCDSB schools will be raising awareness around Pride Month and nurturing a call to build safe and inclusive learning environments for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The Pride Flag will be raised at each school and the Catholic Education Centre. It will be flown throughout the month.

“It is most fitting that June is also the month devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which for Catholics is a sign and symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for all humanity,” wrote Pat Daly, HCDSB Director of Education, in a letter to students. “Drawing on the example of Christ, who preached a message of love and inclusion throughout his ministry, our Catholic schools are called to ensure we are nurturing safe and inclusive learning environments, where every student and every member of the community is welcomed, valued, and respected.

“As Catholics, we believe that we are all made in the image and likeness of God, who created us and loves us unconditionally – just as we are.”

On June 14, HCDSB will also hold a Pride Awareness Day at all of its schools.

The day is to reaffirm their commitment to honour the dignity and worth of each member of their community by nurturing safe, welcoming and inclusive schools.

A number of other learning activities and events are also planned throughout the month.
