Residents in Uxbridge will soon be using a new app to cover their parking expenses.

The township developed a year-long pilot in 2021 to study paid parking permits around the Trail Heads and Fields. After the study, using resident feedback, the town decided to instead use HotSpot, a smartphone app.

The app opens a menu in which the driver inputs their licence plate number, car model, parking location and time. HotSpot then automatically calculates the charge for however long the driver wishes to stay. It will also send an alert when the parking time is set to expire.

HotSpot was first launched in 2013 by a team of parking and payment management experts. Numerous other municipalities across Canada and the United States have switched to the app including Peterborough, Barrie, Halifax, Moose Jaw, Jasper, Red Deer, Oregon City and Saint John.

Uxbridge will adopt the new system in May and will provide more detailed instruction closer to the launch date.
