New officers join Durham Police at Oshawa graduation ceremony

Durham Region Police welcomed 20 new recruits to the organization at an in-person graduation ceremony last week in Oshawa.
It is the first ceremony attended by family and friends since January 2020, due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This graduation ceremony still looked a little different than ceremonies prior to the pandemic, which traditionally includes the DRPS Pipes and Drums and choir.
Instead, audio recordings were used and the recruits recited their Declaration of Membership and received their badge while wearing masks after being greeted by Chief Todd Rollauer.
Rollauer reminded the recruits to, “Stay healthy, stay safe and look out for each other,” in his address.
The graduating class voted for Constable Carson Bird to receive of the Allan D Christiansen Memorial Award.

Constable Allan Christiansen was killed in a motor vehicle collision while returning home from the March Past Ceremony after completing his Basic Constable Course at the Ontario Police College. DRPS presents a member of each recruit class an award in Allan’s honour.
Bird was given this award for his positive attitude in life and training, exceptional leadership qualities, dedication to a high level of personal fitness and commitment to volunteering.
