A new muffin shop in Oakville is on a “mission” to nourish your family with healthy, handcrafted muffins.

Mary’s Muffins, located at 326 Kerr St., celebrated its grand opening on Saturday (Feb. 25) with a ribbon cutting that included Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

Founder Mary Legakis Engel says she discovered the need for a healthier version of the tasty snack when she watched her toddler enjoying the sugar-filled muffin cups with chocolate chips and her conscience got the better of her.

“I let this dilemma carry on for about a month or so, all the while searching the grocery stores for healthier muffin options,” she said. “I came up empty-handed.”

That changed when a post came across her social media feed with healthy muffin recipes.

“My conscience let out a huge sigh of relief,” said Legakis Engel, who would start her own little business during the pandemic, making the muffins out of a local community kitchen and selling them through a website.

“I made them. My family loved them. Since then, I have taken my own spin on healthy homemade muffins, and they just keep getting healthier and tastier.”

With limitations on providing access to the products customers wanted and the difficulty to sell the muffins at a reasonable price, Legakis Engel decided to open her retail shop and invited people to contribute to their Kick Start Fundraiser.

The new shop and café offers boxes of mixed flavours, flash-frozen single flavours and local roasted coffee.

Featured flavours include the lemony blueberry muffin, banana breakfast muffin with dark chocolate chips, banana walnut whole wheat muffin and sugar-free blueberry lemon keto muffin bites

Mary’s Muffins is open daily from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
