Bed, bath and beyond closing 54 Canada locations

Stoney Creek and Whitby residents who are already missing their local Bed Bath & Beyond location might be relieved to hear that another home goods store is about to fill the void.

Recently, Canadian retailer Doug Putman, whose investment group has purchased Toys”R”Us and Babies”R”Us Canada, Sunrise Records, and more, announced the launch of rooms + spaces, a new brand that will take over 21 former Bed Bath and Beyond and buybuy BABY locations this summer.

According to a news release, the new store openings will generate more than 500 jobs.

“rooms + spaces…will cater to the modern shopper who is looking to create spaces throughout their home that reflect their unique personality and style,” the news release reads, adding that the new stores will sell kitchen gadgets, towels, bed wedges, cherry pitters and other home goods.

The stores will sell a range of products created by Canadian businesses and suppliers such as oxo, Homedics, Cuisinart, Martex and more.

The Hamilton store will be located at Heritage Greene (1783 Stone Church Road East) in Stoney Creek. The Whitby location will be located in the Thickson Ridge Power Centre (1650 Victoria Street East).

Putman is acquiring more than 800,000 square feet of real estate with this acquisition.

“With so many empty storefronts across the country right now, Canadians are craving enjoyable in-store shopping experiences where they can see and touch products, especially when it comes to outfitting a home. I see such a strong opportunity to invest in Canadian retail and I’m always looking for new opportunities,” Putman said in a statement.

“The creation of a new home brand was a natural addition to my retail portfolio, which now provides shoppers with everything they need across the baby, toy and home categories.”

Greg Dyer, the former general manager of Bed Bath & Beyond Canada, will lead the company.

Other Ontario cities will also see new rooms + spaces locations over the coming months, including Belleville, Cambridge, Kitchener, Richmond Hill, Vaughan and more.
