Up-and-coming cricketers will be able to hone their skills when Brampton launches its first youth cricket league mottled after the Global T20 tournament – one of the most-watched sporting events in the world.

With six teams in three age groups, Brampton’s new Youth Cricket League will be open to kids between 6 and 15 years old and will mirror the annual GT20 tournament held in the city.

It will be part of the Brampton Sports League with spots for 15 players on each team for Brampton youth and GT20 academy players.

Registration for the new Youth Cricket League is open now in three age groups – U9, U12 and U15.

Cricket is the fastest-growing sport in the city and Brampton has set its sights on becoming the cricket capital of Canada, investing some $8 million in cricket infrastructure and programming this year alone including two new cricket pitches at Blue Oak Park and County Court Park that will help support the Youth Cricket League and give more residents a chance to play.

The league could help find the next Saad Bin Zafar – Canada cricket captain and Brampton native.

“Our new Youth Cricket League provides an opportunity for young people to develop their skills and promotes active living and healthy lifestyles,” Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement. “I am thrilled to see this initiative come to fruition and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our youth.”

The city is also moving ahead with plans to build Brampton’s first year-round cricket facility for players to use even in the winter months. Other recent cricket additions include Brampton’s first tape ball cricket pitch, a four-lane batting cage at the Kwality Sweets Cricket Pitch, and shade shelters at various pitches across the city to provide some relief during the summer.

Last year’s GT20 tournament in Brampton was broadcast in 150 countries with an estimated audience of over 150 million. The tournament was the second-most-watched sporting event in North America in 2019 with some 113 million viewers, eclipsed only by the Super Bowl.

Registering for the Youth Cricket League can be done online and the city say put together a list of tips to help streamline the sign-up process:
