New COVID cases down but three more deaths to report in Pickering, Whitby and Scugog

The number of new COVID-19 cases continues to drop in Durham Region while the death count continues to rise, with three more fatalities attributed to the virus happening this past weekend.
One of the deaths occurred at the Bay Ridges Long Term Care home in Pickering yesterday, which has seen its outbreak grow to include 28 people in isolation. Two more fatalities happened Saturday, with one in Scugog – which reported only one new case all weekend – and the other in Whitby.
The biggest outbreak in Durham – by far – is at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa, which reported eight deaths after an outbreak last year. This outbreak has not resulted in any deaths but has spread to 103 people. Fifty-five are isolating and 48 cases are now considered resolved.
Other major outbreaks are at Orchard Villa (18), Fairview Lodge (12), Extendicare Oshawa (10) and Village of Taunton Mills LTCH (10). Glen Hill Strathaven, which reported 28 staff and residents self-isolating last Thursday, has managed to whittle that number down to nine as many cases get resolved.
New COVID cases in Durham are way below the numbers set a week ago, with totals of 234, 217 and 142 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Oshawa continues to lead with 76,53 and 38 cases reported over the three-day period.
There are 172 people in hospital, which is down ten from Thursday, with 14 in ICU and 42 under investigation. The active case count is actually down 55 to 8,567.
