Chances are pretty good that if you work for Peel Regional Police–either as a cop or, to a lesser degree, in a civilian position–you’re earning more than $100,000 a year.

According to Ontario’s latest Public Sector Salary Disclosure list, released last week and more commonly known as the Sunshine List, nearly two in every three people employed by Peel police earned an annual salary north of six figures in 2021.

The list shows that 1,994 Peel police employees hit the $100K mark last year in earnings, collectively taking home $264.2 million (average of $132,397 per employee). The vast majority of those are police officers, mostly constables.

In total, the Peel police force–the second-largest municipal force in Ontario and third-largest in Canada–employs about 3,100 people (2,200 police officers and some 900 civilian workers).

Last year’s Sunshine List shows 1,864 Peel police employees earned six-figure salaries in 2020, collectively making $234.8 million. In 2019, 1,842 employees were on the list (total $230 million in combined salaries).

By comparison when looking at the most recent list, 5,025 Toronto Police Services employees made $100,000 or more in 2021 (combined $657.1 million in salaries, average of about $130,000 per worker).

In total, the Toronto police force employs about 7,700 people, 5,500 of whom are police officers.

Topping the list of earners on the Peel police force last year was Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah, who took home $327,220. He earned $299,196 the previous year as only the third-highest earner on the force in 2020 (making less than two deputy chiefs at the time).

Rounding out the top five earners in 2021 are Deputy Chief Marc Andrews ($270,842), Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich ($268,659), Deputy Chief Anthony Odoardi ($250,471) and Staff Sergeant Paul Neville ($248,577).

Only one police chief in the GTA earned more than Peel’s top cop did in 2021.

Toronto Police Chief Donald Ramer made $332,023 last year while police chiefs in Halton (Stephen Tanner $306,706), Hamilton (Frank Bergen $267,504) and York (James MacSween $298,522) earned less.

In annual recruiting efforts, Peel police say they offer a good salary and comprehensive benefits package for both cops on the street and civilian workers.

Here’s what a police officer in Peel earns (not including overtime):

  • Cadet, second class–$48,936
  • Cadet, first class–$53,829
  • Recruit constable–$58,722
  • Constable, fourth class–$68,509
  • Constable, third class–$78,297
  • Constable, second class–$88,083
  • Constable, first class–$105,535

The Sunshine List is released each year at this time to identify provincial and municipal government workers who earn more than $100,000 annually. The purpose is to provide transparency into the spending patterns of government bodies and agencies.
