NDP Pledges to Make Dental Care More Affordable

Saranjit Singh and Navjit Kaur, two NDP candidates from Brampton have announced the party’s intention to implement a plan that would include dental care as part of provincial health coverage--in other words, you wouldn’t have to pay out of pocket for it.
“I hear from many people in Brampton who have actually travelled to other countries to seek dental care. In a country as rich as Canada, it is shameful that it is more affordable for some families to fly to another country for dental care than it is to go to a dentist in their community,” Singh says. “We can do better for people in Brampton. New Democrats have a plan to make sure everyone has the dental care they need.”
According to the available statistics, 20 percent of Canadians avoid going to the dentist due to the cost associated with doing so.
The NDP’s plan would extend dental coverage to 4.3 million Canadians, as well as implement a plan that would help uninsured Canadians with household incomes below $90,000 annually starting as soon as 2020.
For families earning below $70,000 annually, dental care would be completely covered, and families earning $70,000 to $90,000 annually would pay a sliding copay.
The NDP estimates their new plan would save a family of four earning less than $70,000 a year approximately $1,240 per year.
Additionally, according to the NDP, emergency room visits due to dental emergencies caused by ignoring regular visits cost the taxpayers approximately $155 million every year.
This initiative is part of the NDP’s plan to make life more affordable for families, young people and seniors
