Crime prevention meeting in Mississauga after first murder of 2024

Residents of a north Mississauga community that’s been plagued by deadly gun violence and other crime in recent years are reaching out to police for help.

The latest murder in the Meadowvale area of the city, in which a 26-year-old man was shot multiple times on Jan. 3 during late afternoon rush hour on Battleford Road near Glen Erin Drive, has residents especially concerned — and fearful.

Mississauga Ward 9 Coun. Martin Reid, who represents the area, said people in the community have reached out to him and police in an effort to address the violence.

He said that in response to those requests, a community meeting is being held on Feb. 2 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Meadowvale Community Centre. It’s located just steps from the scene of the Jan. 3 slaying, Mississauga’s first murder of 2024.

In an email to residents, Reid said members of Peel Regional Police, Safe City Mississauga and Peel Crime Stoppers will join him at the meeting “to address your concerns of crime prevention and safety awareness.”

Meanwhile, police remain on the hunt for the killer of Shawn Murphy, 26, of Mississauga. At about 5 p.m. just three days into the new year, he encountered two males on Battleford Road, just east of Glen Erin Drive in a densely populated residential neighbourhood known in recent years for gun violence.

According to police, Murphy was shot several times and then two males were spotted running from the scene. No weapon was recovered.

The scene of the shooting is just a couple of blocks west of Erin Mills Parkway.

Investigators have not released any further description of the culprits and are appealing to witnesses to come forward.

Police told reporters at the murder scene on Jan. 4 that “this is a very crowded area (with pedestrians and motorists)” and “we’re urging members of the community who may have seen anything” to come forward and contact police.

Police said the 911 call reporting gunshots was received shortly after 5 p.m. on Jan. 3 Officers and other first responders quickly located a man, later identified as Murphy, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was rushed to hospital, where he died a short time later.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide investigators at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205, or Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
