Murder charge laid in intimate partner violence case in Niagara

Police have charged a Niagara man with first-degree murder after a woman was found dead yesterday.

The woman was found dead after police searched rural area near a home on Victoria Avenue, between Greenlane and John Street, in Lincoln yesterday (Oct. 11), Niagara Regional Police said in a press release.

Police were called to the home just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 11). The Criminal Investigative Unit, Homicide Unit and Forensic Services Unit responded.

The Emergency Task Unit, Canine Unit, and Marine Unit assisted with a coordinated search of the property.

Around 12:20 p.m. the woman was found.

A 56-year-old man, who is a resident of the Town of Lincoln, is charged with one count of first-degree murder.

As this incident involves intimate partner violence, police say they will not release the name of the accused in an effort to protect the identity of the victim and her surviving family at this time.

The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.  Area residents can expect a continued police presence in the area.

There is no on-going threat to public safety.
