Last week, multiple schools in Milton reported an absence rate below 15 per cent.

According to provincial data, these rates reflect absences reported for Feb. 24, 2022.

The reason why students and staff have been absent is not specified and while it is not known if the reasons are related to COVID-19, there have been some concerns over the accuracy of the figures since certain schools mark remote-learning students present at times where they may be isolating.

Multiple schools reported an absence rate below 10 per cent, with the exception of Bishop Paul Francis Reding Catholic Secondary School, which reported an absence rate of 11.5 per cent.

The Province of Ontario has been monitoring overall absence rates in schools as of recently, as opposed to the reports of COVID-19 cases.

As a result, the Ministry of Education is now requiring schools with a student and staff absence rate of 30 per cent or more, to report them to their local Public Health Unit.
