Police have hit a Brampton man with dozens of charges including attempted murder after investigators say he led officers on a chase and rammed into multiple cruisers.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. on June 10 when officers noticed a stopped sprinter van along Highway 11-17 near Highway 527 in the Thunder Bay area, the OPP says.

Officers became suspicious after speaking with the driver and initiated a traffic stop, and the male driver remained for a short time before fleeing from police. Additional officers located the truck further west on Highway 11-17 but the driver again failed to stop for police.

Around an hour later, police again spotted the vehicle and said the driver intentionally struck and damaged three police vehicles.

The male suspect also attempted to set the vehicle on fire and officers deployed a conductive energy weapon (commonly known as a Taser) at the man.

Several officers received minor injuries that did not require medical attention, and the accused was treated for minor injuries, police say.

The OPP says Gurjit Singh, 41, of Brampton, has been charged with four counts of attempt to commit murder, three counts of assault a peace officer, two counts of flight from peace officer, fail to surrender permit for motor vehicle, and possession of a schedule I substance – heroin, and possession of a schedule I substance – methamphetamine.

The accused remains in custody and was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on Monday.
