A majority of students and staff returning to classrooms in both Mississauga and Brampton today (March 21) continue to wear facemasks.

Unofficial surveys of educators at both the public and Catholic school systems show that approximately 75 per cent of students continue to wear the masks to stop the spread of COVID-19. In some settings the numbers are 90 per cent.

Today is the first day of classes after the March Break as well the first day the Ontario government has said students and staff at schools no longer have to wear the face coverings.

The results are not surprising according to several teachers who have been commenting on the results.

“Most people, whether it be the staff, the parents who get their children ready for school, or the students themselves have a lot of common sense when it comes to safety,” said one Mississauga teacher who asked that her name not be used in fear of retaliation by those who no longer want the masks to be worn. “Everyone has the right to do whatever they like, but most are choosing to be cautious by masking up. I think that is the right move.”

A staff member at another school in Brampton pointed out that those who continue to wear masks appear to be part of the silent majority who are listening to medical experts when it comes to the spread of the virus.

She said even though anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers draw a lot of attention to their point of view, most Canadians still aren’t willing to take any risks if it means it could lead to contracting COVID-19.
