Two homes in Hamilton’s east end suffered $1 million in damages from a Friday morning fire.

Firefighters responded to structure fires at 316 and 314 Britannia Ave., between Harmony and Cameron avenues just before 4:10 a.m.

First-arriving crews reported heavy smoke and fire that could be seen coming through the roofs of two, two-and-a-half-storey homes.

Firefighters entered both homes and found them to be vacant.

“It was determined that a passerby had alerted the residents of the fire and they were able to self-evacuate,” said fire chief David Cunliffe.

No injuries have been reported.

“The fire advanced quickly throughout the upper floors of both homes,” Cunliffe added. “It took some time for crews to bring this stubborn fire under control.”

Both homes have suffered extensive damage. As a result, the fire marshal was notified.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
