Families looking to bring a furry member into the fold may want to head to PetSmart this weekend for PetSmart Charities of Canada’s National Adoption Weekend.

For the event, more than 200 animal welfare organizations bring adoptable pets into PetSmart stores across the country.

At the store on Martindale Crescent in Ancaster, animals from the Simcoe and District Humane Society will be up for adoption. Through this campaign, the Humane Society and Petsmart are hoping to find homes for more than 100 pets.

There will be a number of different animals up for adoption, including dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters and gerbils.

“The selection of pets will vary by store location,” a press release from PetSmart Charities says. “So, we recommend reaching out to your local PetSmart store to learn about what’s available for adoption near you.”

When considering adopting, potential pet parents are urged to keep in mind that pets can provide as many benefits to you as you do them, such as helping to reduce stress, provide companionship, get the daily recommended amount of physical activity and more.

PetSmart Charities urges prospective adoptive families to keep these guidelines in mind when preparing to bring the newest family member home:

  • Life Stages: Consider the energy levels of younger or older pets and choose an energy level that matches your family’s lifestyle.
  • Living Environment: In addition to the type and age of pet you adopt, you’ll need to consider the space you have available to welcome your new furry friend.
  • Veterinary Care: The adoption fee most often covers a vet health assessment, spay/neuter, vaccinations, micro-chipping, but you should consider the long term costs of caring for your new pet’s health.

“The prospect of a new pet is exciting, but before you get caught up in the excitement of adopting a pet, it’s important to do a bit of homework and have conversations to ensure you’re choosing a lifelong fit for your home,” PetSmart Charities told InTheHammer.

So you want to adopt. Here’s what you need to know:

For families looking to adopt, they should bring valid ID and if currently renting, a copy of a lease or other proof that pets are allowed in the property. Depending on the type of pet, bringing a safe method of transport (ie: carrier) for the new pet is advisable.

Potential pet parents will also have to fill out paperwork and possibly complete an interview with a volunteer. Home visits might also be a condition of adoption in some cases.
Can’t make it out this weekend? Or now isn’t the right time?

Prospective adoptive pet parents can always visit PetSmart’s pet finder at petsmartcharities.ca to see which pets in the area need forever homes.

Dogs adopted this weekend will go home with a free coat or sweater to ensure that they are prepared for outdoors this winter.

Through PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekends, PetSmart says they have helped to facilitate more than nine-million adoptions, more than any other brick-and-mortar organization.

The adoption event starts Friday and runs until Sunday (Feb. 28 – Mar.1) from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. local time on Sunday.
