More high-density development coming to south Oshawa

The corner of Wentworth Street and Glen Street in south Oshawa is about to get a whole lot busier.
Staff at the City of Oshawa are recommending approval of a new building, varying in height from eight to 15 storeys and containing 306 apartment units, for the north-west corner of the property. Already on the site is an eight-storey, 264 unit building and the property, which stretches to Cedar Street on the east, also contains two 50 year-old high-rise structures in 280 Wentworth and 1040 Cedar, both with a chequered past.
A revised application from Bousfields Inc. (on behalf of Cedar Wentworth Holdings Limited/Medallion Corporation) will be before Oshawa Council December 13 for approval.
The development will include the apartment building, an above-ground parking lot with 575 spaces and 190 bicycle spaces and three outdoor amenity areas.
Medallion Corp. hosted two virtual open houses to give residents a chance to see the revised proposal with 40 residents of the existing buildings attending the meetings in April and May of this year. There were concerns raised over long-standing issues at the two main existing buildings (280 Wentworth and 1040 Cedar) of maintenance and insect problems, and the applicant was told they should “focus on improving the existing buildings” before building new ones.
Oshawa planning staff said Medallion “acknowledged” past issues under “previous ownership” and assured residents the company is working on improvements to the buildings and renovating existing units as they become vacant.
