The driver of the MiWay bus involved in a fatal crash yesterday will be placed on leave until the investigation is complete.

The eight-vehicle crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday (June 8) at Rexwood and Derry Roads in Mississauga’s Malton area.

Sadly, one woman died and at least eight others were injured in the crash which involved a MiWay bus, a flatbed truck, taxi and various other vehicles.

The driver of the MiWay bus was one of the people injured, City of Mississauga director of transit Geoff Marinoff told insauga.com in a statement.

“We are saddened by yesterday’s tragic events,” Marinoff said. “Our sympathies go out to the person who lost their life, those who were injured and their families.

The City of Mississauga’s MiWay transit is cooperating fully with the Peel Regional Police investigation. The driver of the MiWay bus is in hospital being treated for their injuries and will be placed on leave while the investigation is underway.”

Video circulating online shows a line of slow-moving vehicles before the MiWay bus comes into view, crashing into the rear of a grey four-door car, which violently collides with the vehicles ahead. The bus continues, jumping the curb travelling over grass next to the sidewalk.

MiWay bus finally stopped next to a flatbed truck.

The video was captured from a transport truck and the driver told news outlets the bus “just didn’t stop.”

The bus brake lights did not appear to be on as it continued down the road. The City of Mississauga would not say if the bus was malfunctioning or if the driver had a medical issue.

Police have not yet said what caused the crash.

Just after the crash, witnesses could be seen trying to help the injured in the vehicles.
