Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu returns to tennis action after six month absence

Mississauga’s Bianca Andreescu will return to the tennis court this week.

After a six month absence, Andreescu is scheduled to play at the Prosche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany.

“I’m happy to be back,” Andreescu told reporters at a press conference today (April 18).

Andreescu, 21, has battled through a number of injuries since capturing the hearts of many in this country in 2019 when she won the U.S. Open, the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title.

In the past three years her play has been limited to just 36 matches due to a knee injury and COVID-19. When she did play she was inconsistent and bowed out of tournaments early.

She says she has taken the off time of to prepare herself both physically and mentally. Andreescu says her passion for the game has returned and looks forward to her match against Germany’s Jule Niemeier.

After Germany Andreescu has plans to play in tournaments in Spain and Italy.
