Bianca Andreescu has reached her first tournament final in more than a year after her semi-final opponent withdrew with a neck injury earlier today (June 24) at the Bad Homburg Open tennis competition in Germany.

The 22-year-old Mississaugan will take on either Alize Cornet (Women’s Tennis Association No. 44), of France, or Caroline Garcia (WTA No. 75), also of France, in Saturday’s final at centre court.

For Andreescu (WTA No. 64), it will mark her first grass-court final. Match starts at 7:30 a.m. (EST).

Scheduled to play today in semi-final action, Andreescu had her ticket booked to the final when her opponent, tournament No. 4 seed Simona Halep (WTA No. 19), of Romania, withdrew due to injury.

Andreescu has not lost a single set this week at the Bad Homburg tournament. She defeated top-seeded Daria Kasatkina (WTA No. 13), of Russia, 6-4, 6-1 in quarter-final action.

Earlier, she bested England’s Katie Swan (WTA No. 223) 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-final round. To start the tourney, Andreescu defeated Italian Martina Trevisan, the tourney’s No. 7 seed and WTA No. 27, in impressive fashion, scoring a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

After Saturday’s final, Andreescu will then set her sights on Wimbledon, which gets underway Monday in London.

Her first-round match will be against American Emina Bektas. Time of the match to be determined.

Andreescu’s performance this week in Germany represents a huge step forward on her journey to once again being considered among the world’s top tennis players.

The Mississauga tennis star, once ranked as high as No. 4 in the world after winning the US Open in 2019, continues to make her way back from a lengthy injury/mental health break on the WTA circuit.

She burst onto the world tennis scene with that surprise US Open win and told media last month at the Italian Open that the past few years have been tough for her, but she’s slowly “getting to my top form” again.
