Mississauga support will give Brampton larger voice in Peel Region

Brampton is on the verge of having a larger voice in the affairs of Peel Region.
Today (December 17), Peel councillors voted in favour of granting Brampton two additional seats on council for a total of nine, with the two places coming at the expense of Caledon which will drop down to three.
Both Mississauga and Brampton councillors all voted in favour of the move while most Caledon members left the meeting in protest before their expected negative votes were cast.
The revamped council would consist of 25 members with 12 from Mississauga, nine from Brampton and three from Caledon, plus the chairperson.
With Peel’s stamp of approval the only thing standing in the way of the change is the Provincial government which could quash the plan. However, because the seat allocation was redistributed rather than adding more politicians the Province is not expected to stand in the way of the move.
The new makeup of Peel Regional council would commence following the next municipal election in the fall of 2022.
