John River, or Matthew John Derrick-Huie, is a Canadian rapper, songwriter and activist from Mississauga. He has released several music videos and mixtapes.

You may have watched his music video “Hope City II,” which has gone viral online and was nominated for a Much Music Video Award for Best Hip Hop Music Video in 2015. Or you may have listened his music in the hit show, Teenagers.

River started his journey by writing songs and participating in rap battles in his Mississauga school. River then dropped out to pursue his dream career in the music industry.

River has recently released his mixtape called The Academy.

Exlaim! has stated, “River is a revivalist, picking instrumentals throughout this mixtape that harken back to rap’s jazz-indebted past, and blatantly defying the woozy, synth drenched SoundCloud sound de jour.”

The mixtape was released on January 25.

“Aside from such sterling vintage production choices throughout, River’s lyrical content also eschews the shallow mumble rap style dominating so many of today’s playlists,” they continue.
