Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie has joined with other big city mayors from across Ontario who are calling for a province-wide proof of vaccination system.

The mayors have jointly asked Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his government to implement the plan to keep in step with other global jurisdictions.

“Around the world, certified vaccination records are helping businesses and event spaces to safely open while encouraging more people to get vaccinated,” the mayors say in a joint statement. “This will help reduce a fourth wave in Ontario as well.”

The mayors point out that organizations such as the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the Ontario Science table as well as colleges and universities are making similar calls for a proof of vaccination plan.

“The faster we can enact a proof of vaccination system, the faster we can protect more Ontarians from the effects of the Delta variant,” said Jeff Lehman, Chair of Ontario Big City Mayors (OBCM) and Mayor of Barrie. “This will support the safe reopening of our economy and protect our residents.”

Officially, the motion that will be sent to Queen’s Park by OBCM reads: “that a system of certified proof of vaccination and testing protocols to be utilized in support of keeping our vaccinated public safe; and our businesses, schools and public institutions free from further shutdowns as future waves of COVID-19 may materialize.”

Ontario’s Big City Mayors (OBCM) is comprised of mayors of Ontario cities with populations of 100,000 or more. Collectively, the mayors represent nearly 70 per cent of Ontario’s population.

Along with Mississauga, other cities include Hamilton, Brampton, Milton, Burlington, Oakville, St. Catharines and Oshawa.
