Hung and Hao Nguyen, of Mississauga, are $2 million richer after lottery win.

A Mississauga couple has a “whim” to thank for a recent lottery win that pocketed them a $2 million jackpot.

Hung and Hao Nguyen, parents of three and grandparents to five, won the Ontario 49 jackpot in the July 28 draw after buying a ticket on a whim while shopping at the grocery store for their grandson.

“I kept the ticket in my pocket for five days before checking it,” said Hung Nguyen while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect the winnings. After learning of the jackpot win, he added, laughing: “I went out and bought pants with zippered pockets after that.”

“We were at the grocery store when we decided to randomly check our ticket. My husband was shaking and calling me over,” added Hao Nguyen.

They plan to share their winnings with their children and support various charities.

“Even without this win we were supporting many charities, so now we can help even more,” Hao Nguyen said.

The winning ticket was purchased at Sobey’s on Laird Drive in East York.
