Mississauga Ward 7 Councillor Dipika Damerla has taken an unpaid leave of absence as she attempts to reclaim her former provincial seat in the city.

Damerla represented the Ontario riding of Mississauga East-Cooksville from 2011 to 2018, when she lost the election to Conservative Kaleed Rasheed.

From there, she made the jump to City council, winning the Ward 7 seat in the October 2018 municipal election.

Now, the longtime community leader is looking to reclaim the provincial seat.

In a letter to the City of Mississauga, Damerla announced she is taking an unpaid leave from her council duties from May 4 to June 3, one day after the Ontario election.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie read aloud the brief letter at today’s (May 4) meeting of council, saying she wanted to put on the record that the councillor was doing the right thing by taking a leave of absence without pay.

During her time as MPP, Damerla also served as Ontario’s Associate Minister of Health and Long Term Care and Minister of Seniors Affairs.
