Mississauga may soon make all new developments build bicycle parking stations.

The City of Mississauga is considering a plan that would require all new developments to build bicycle parking stations alongside residential and commercial structures.

Staff and City councillors are mulling over details in the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee’s (CAC) Parking Regulations Study, which is also looking to determine what fees to charge cyclists for parking their two-wheeled vehicles.

While specific rates are yet to be tabled, the report does indicate that higher bicycle parking rates would be charged in the City Centre compared to the rest of Mississauga.

Any plan requiring new developments to have bicycle parking structures would include apartments, townhouses (without exclusive garages) and other multi-unit buildings, in addition to retail developments, offices, schools and other institutions.

Committee members will discuss the plan further at a CAC meeting later today before finalizing a report for consideration by Council.

At the moment, they’re seeking to engage councillors, residents and other stakeholders as they look to fine tune the document before moving on to the next stage, where recommendations will be made and public meetings held.
