A change in the way Peel Region is charging for water and wastewater service could save Mississauga and Brampton residents money.

The local region has changed the way it bills customers, moving on from a single consumption charge. Customers will receive bills with two separate parts, including a service delivery charge and a consumption charge.

By using a service delivery charge to cover fixed costs, the rate for basic consumption is now lower overall. The consumption charge shows the amount of water that used during a billing period.

More than 80 per cent of the fixed costs needed to provide water to your home and take wastewater from your home are supported by the service delivery charge. The fixed costs are expenses that remain the same throughout a specific period.

Residents living in single-units will now have a rate with two levels of water consumption.

A basic use rate of less than 50 cubic meters of water used is charged at a lower rate. The higher user rate, above 50 cubic meters of water usage, is charged at a higher rate.

Residents living in multi-units will continue to have one water rate, while businesses, including industrial, commercial, and institutional, will continue to have one consumption rate.
