Police say illegal street racing and aggressive high-speed driving are still a major issue in Mississauga and Brampton after laying over 500 charges in a five-month period.

Peel Regional Police have shared the results of a yearly initiative called Project ERASE (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere), as well as Project Noisemaker which targets modified or excessively loud exhaust systems.

From May 1, 2022 to October 1, 2022, officers targeted vehicles in certain “hotspot” areas of Peel Region, investigating a total of 2,191 vehicles and issuing 556 stunt driving charges.

Police also laid 132 charges for an improper muffler/no muffler, and 14 Criminal Code charges related to impaired and dangerous driving.

A total of 1,440 provincial offence notices were issued.

“The goal of the ERASE Program is to change poor and aggressive driver behaviour through education, strategic enforcement, and modifying social behaviour,” said police in a statement on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

“Street racing is an illegal and dangerous activity that risks the lives of our community members.”

Police have said they’ll continue to take a “zero tolerance” approach to street racing and other dangerous driving incidents.

Members of the public are also encouraged to report any aggressive driving or illegal street racing activities to police at 905-453-3311.
