Peel Region is launching a new awareness campaign about the dangers of speeding, which the Region says continues to be a serious problem on Mississauga and Brampton roadways.

According to Peel data, drivers in 2021 were issued close to 26,000 total speeding tickets, and more than 1,600 total stunt driving charges were laid.

Stunt driving violations tend to increase during the warmer months, according to the Region.

Peel’s new “Don’t Speed” awareness campaign aims to change people’s perceptions of speeding and drive awareness of the consequences of speeding.

Stunt driving charges may result in an immediate 30-day roadside suspension, fines of up to $10,000, and other potential consequences.

“When a driver chooses to drive over the posted speed limit, they endanger their own safety and the safety of others, including pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers,” a recent statement from Peel Region says.

The Region says it’s working with local municipalities, community groups, agencies and partner organizations, and other local partners like Peel Regional Police and Ontario Provincial Police to reduce collisions and serious injuries on the road.

The cities of Mississauga and Brampton continue to employ the use of automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras in various traffic areas to encourage drivers to slow down.

The cameras are able to detect when a vehicle is travelling above the posted speed limit and automatically issue a ticket to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The cameras are rotated to various speeding hotspots in the city. There are currently cameras in the following locations in Mississauga:

  • Ceremonial Dr. (between Chagall Ct. and Bristol Rd W.)
  • Cliff Rd. (between Rudar Rd. and Abruz Blvd.)
  • Copenhagen Rd. (between Bendigo Ct. and Tamar Rd.)
  • Forest Dr. (between Derry Rd. and Juneberry Rd.)
  • Garthwood Rd. (Colonial Dr. to Clayton Rd.)
  • Gooderham Estate Blvd. (Old Derry Rd. to Silverthorn Mill Ave.)
  • Lewisham Dr. (between Fontwell Cres. and Truscott Dr.)
  • Melton Dr. (between Stir Cr. to Rambo Rd.)
  • Ponytrail Dr. (between Fieldgate Dr. and Silverplains Dr.)
  • Queesnston Dr. (between Ashcroft Cres. and Fellmore Dr.)
  • Runningbrook Dr. (between Autumn Harvest Dr. and Riverspray Cres.)
  • Shrwood Mills Blvd. (between Brockworth Dr. and Fallingbrook Dr.)
  • Silver Creek Blvd. (between Mississauga Valley Blvd. and Gwendale Cres.)
  • Swinburne Dr. (between Bancroft Dr. and Douguy Blvd.)
  • Terragar Blvd. (between Rosehurst Dr. and Black Walnut Tr.)
  • Thorncrest Dr. (Colonial Dr. to Loyalist Dr.)

“We have multiple programs and initiatives to slow drivers down,” said Geoff Wright, the City’s commissioner of transportation and works.

“(Last) year, we deployed more than 50 ‘slow streets’ and speed radar devices on 128 roads to make you aware of your speed, and designated 93 new Community Safety Zones where the speed limit has been reduced and the fines for speeding have been doubled.”

Peel police say they’ve been taking a zero-tolerance approach with respect to traffic enforcement in school zones in recent years, alerting drivers that they’ll face stiff fines for offences such as speeding and disobeying school bus flashing lights.
