The Milton Public Library is hosting a Toronto author for a special edition of Reading Corner.

Illustrator and author Janine Carrington will be the guest at the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton event celebrating Black History Month.

The family-friendly workshop, best suited for children age 7 or 8, but open to everyone, is an exploration of beauty, resilience and resistance through the Trinidad and Tobago “Carnival,” which also occurs in February.

Using age-appropriate language and illustrations, the workshop will discuss the journey of African slaves to the Caribbean and how they incorporated their African cultures into the existing Lent festivities as a way of coping with hardship while they gained their freedom.

A craft will be created together to celebrate Carnival followed by a reading of Janine’s new book, Em and the Cat.

The event is Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. To register, visit the MPL webpage.
