A 79-year-old driver is dead after a ‘medical episode’ led to a collision with a street light and a bus shelter Wednesday evening in Port Perry.

Durham Police say the vehicle operated by the man was travelling west on Curt Street just before 7:30 p.m. when he lost control of his car at Water Street and left the roadway, striking the street light and the bus shelter.

The driver was found without vital signs and transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police believe the man died due to the medical episode.

Members of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit were called to the scene and a portion of the roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected. The roadway has since been reopened.

Anyone with new information about this incident is asked to call D/Cst. Emily Vander Duim of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5227.
