A Hamilton man is facing charges following a sexual assault earlier this week in Stoney Creek.

At about 11:40 p.m. on Monday, May 1, the female victim was exiting a city bus in the area of Mud Street West and Paramount Drive when a male followed her off the bus.

“The suspect continued to follow the victim towards a nearby trail where he sexually assaulted the victim,” said police.

A 27-year-old Hamilton man, whose name was not disclosed by police, has been arrested.

He is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and sexually explicit material under 16 years.

Police thanked community members for their assistance in identifying the suspect.

“There is no guaranteed way to prevent a sexual assault. Sharing the details of this assault is intended to provide the community information, and people are encouraged to trust their instincts,” police said on Thursday.

Assault victims in need of support are encouraged to reach out to the Sexual Assault Centre’s 24-hour support line at 905-525-4162, or the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre.
