A major watermain break in Hamilton is causing an estimated 9-hour road closure today as crews work to contain the breakage.

The City of Hamilton says the watermain break has occurred at 543 Greenhill Ave. within the Vincent neighbourhood.

An entire excavation and repair of the pipe is necessary.

Hamilton Water has closed Greenhill Ave. from Bunker Hill Dr. to Quigley Rd. to allow crews to make repairs.

The estimated time for completion is 6 p.m., 9 hours after the break first occurred. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to avoid the area until repairs are complete.
