Major fire breaks out at restaurant in St. Catharines, one man pronounced dead

Police are investigating a fatal fire that broke out Saturday afternoon (Nov. 20) in St. Catharines.

At around 4:15 p.m., emergency services responded to a fire at Ma Chinese Cuisine at 123 Geneva Street.

Two males were located in critical condition. They were both treated at the scene and transported by paramedics to a local hospital, where one of the males was pronounce dead.

“The restaurant was evacuated of customers and employees as it was open at the time of the fire,” said police.

Police say the deceased male (a 46 year old Scarborough man) and the other male (a 32 year old Markham man) were both employees of a roofing company working at the restaurant at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
