An ongoing construction project–one of the biggest in the city, to be sure–is about to impact two roads in Mississauga.

This year, the city launched construction of the upcoming Light Rail Transit system (better known as the Hurontario LRT project).

The LRT, a $1.4 billion higher-order transit project being carried out by Metrolinx, will span 20 km and run from Port Credit GO at Lakeshore Rd. in the south to the Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Ave in the north. The LRT will boast 22 stops and provide connections to the Port Credit and Cooksville GO stations, Mississauga Transitway, MiWay and Zum transit lines.

While some troubling whispers regarding the potentially uncertain future of the LRT have emerged in recent weeks, it looks like construction is proceeding as planned.

Metrolinx recently announced that more construction is or will be underway on one of the city’s major streets.

What’s coming up soon?

Enbridge Gas Distribution Line Relocation for Shepard Avenue

To accommodate the construction of the Hurontario LRT, Enbridge Gas Distribution (Enbridge) is required to relocate a gas line at the intersection of Shepard Avenue and King Street East.

Metrolinx says work will start late November 2018 and will last for approximately four weeks. Work will occur between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Metrolinx says that while every effort will be made to minimize disruption, residents and businesses near the work site can expect to hear noise caused by trucks, excavators, backhoes, and other construction equipment related to this work.

During construction hours, lane reductions may be required on King Street East and Shepard
Avenue. Delays are expected, and impacted transit stops will be temporarily relocated to accessible locations. At no time will all lanes be closed.

Transit users should note that due to lane reductions along King Street East and Shepard Avenue, delays can be expected on MiWay Route 4 – Sherway Gardens.

Pedestrians should note that detours may be required, and sidewalk access could be affected.

Bell Network Infrastructure Relocation

To accommodate the construction of the Hurontario LRT, Bell is required to move fibre and coaxial network lines. During Phase 2, Bell contractors will be working in front of 1252 Hurontario and the corner of Inglewood Drive and Old River Road.

Metrolinx says this work will start late-November, 2018 and will last for approximately two weeks.

Metrolinx says that while every effort will be made to minimize disruption, residents and businesses near the work site can expect to hear noise caused by trucks, generators and other construction equipment related to this work.

During construction hours, very few short-term lane reductions will be required along Hurontario Street as well as Inglewood Road. At a minimum, one northbound and southbound lane along Hurontario will be maintained at all times. Traffic delays are expected.

At no time will all lanes be closed.

Transit users should note that due to intermittent lane reductions along Hurontario Street between Mineola and Lakeshore Road East, delays can be expected on Routes 8, 19 and 103.

Pedestrians should note that sidewalk access in the area could be affected. Pedestrians should pay attention to signage and be aware of any possible detours.
