Major changes for gas loyalty program take effect across Canada

Major changes have taken effect for a gas station loyalty program in Canada.

Shell Canada said that as of Tuesday, customers across the country can earn and save with Scene+, Scotiabank, and Tangerine.

Customers are no longer able to earn and redeem Air Miles at Shell after years of partnership.

“With Shell joining the program nationwide, Scene+ now spans more of the categories Canadians use most often, from groceries and fuel to dining, entertainment, banking, home improvement, travel and online shopping,” a press release from Shell said.

“Members can also combine Scene+ rewards with accelerated earn rates from eligible Scotiabank and Tangerine cards, Shell Go+ perks, and instant fuel savings at participating Shell locations.”

The rollout across Canada builds on a launch that happened in Alberta earlier this year.

“Building on our Alberta launch earlier this year, and as part of our planned rollout, Scene+ is now available at Shell stations across Canada, making it easier for customers to earn and redeem rewards as part of their everyday routine,” said Kent Martin, the general manager of Shell Canada Mobility and Convenience.

Shell’s website says this is how the program works:

Scene+ members

• Earn one Scene+ point per litre on fuel
• One Scene+ point per $1 on eligible convenience retail and car wash purchases
• Can redeem 1,000 Scene+ points for $10 off fuel, car wash or eligible convenience items

Scotiabank cardholders

• Get up to 10¢ per litre in value with an eligible Scotiabank card linked to Shell Go+
  • 3¢ per litre off fuel at participating Shell locations
  • An additional 4¢ per litre in savings on Shell V-Power purchases made with an eligible Scotiabank credit card that earns Scene+ points
  • Up to 3¢ per litre in Scene+ points value on Shell V-Power purchases made with an eligible Scotiabank credit card that earns Scene+ points

Tangerine cardholders

• Get up to 10¢ per litre in value with an eligible Tangerine card linked to a Shell Go+ account
  • 3¢ per litre on any fuel at participating Shell locations
  • An additional 4¢ per litre in savings on Shell V-Power purchases made with an eligible Tangerine credit card that earns Scene+ points
  • Up to 3¢ per litre in Scene+ points value on Shell V-Power purchases made with an eligible Tangerine credit card that earns Scene+ points

Shell Go+ members

• Can combine cents per litre savings when they link their eligible Scotiabank or Tangerine card, as well as Scene+ and CAA memberships to their Shell Go+ account
• Bonus rewards when linking Scene+ membership in the Shell app, including:
  • 10 per cent more bonus points on Shell regular, plus and diesel
  • 2x more bonus points on Shell V-Power
  • 10 per cent more bonus points on eligible convenience retail and car wash purchases

Customers can also continue to use their CAA membership to get three cents off per litre, 10 per cent off car washes, and 10 per cent off in-store purchases.

One thousand Scene+ points equals $10 in value for most redemptions.
