Major Car Company Reports Data Breach That May Affect Over 1 Million Customers

If you’re financing your car, your personal information may have been leaked due to a possible data breach, one automobile manufacturer has revealed today.

Approximately 1.13 million customers may be affected by a data breach at Nissan Canada Finance (NCF) on Thursday, December, 21, 2017.

Unauthorize persons may have gained access to information about any customers who have financed their vehicles through NCF and INFINITI Financial Services Canada.

NCF has been aware of the hack since Monday, December 11, 2017, the company revealed in a statement today.

The data breach may have revealed such customer information as customer name, address, vehicle make and model, vehicle identification number (VIN), credit score, loan amount and monthly payment.

No payment card information has been affected.

“We are still investigating exactly what personal information has been impacted,” said NCF.

Though NCF does not know the exact number of customers affected, they are contacting all 1.13 million of their current and past customers who have financed vehicles.

For those customers affected, NCF is offering 12 months of credit monitoring services through TransUnion for free.

Canadian privacy regulators, law enforcement, and data security experts have been called in to investigate.

“We sincerely apologize to the customers whose personal information may have been illegally accessed and for any frustration or inconvenience that this may cause,”said Alain Ballu, president, Nissan Canada Finance. “We are focused on supporting our customers and ensuring the security of our systems."
