A new route on a low-cost airline is taking off from Hamilton Airport this fall.

Play airlines announced the launch of a new flight route to Cardiff, Wales from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport starting on Oct. 12.

“This new route enhances connectivity, providing Canadians with convenient, affordable access to even more exciting destinations around the world,” said Cole Horncastle, executive managing director, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

The new route will be welcome news to Canadian soccer fans as the launch coincides with the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches between Iceland and Wales, according to a press release from Play airlines.

The matches are at Cardiff City Stadium on Oct. 11 and at Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík on Nov. 19.

For those not interested in soccer, the new route will offer an alternative destination in the United Kingdom. A one-way fare starts at around $215 (excluding taxes and fees).

Wales is known for its rugged coastline, national parks such as Snowdonia National Park, medieval castles and historic sites.

Play also offers a “stayover program” launched on Jan. 29. This program allows passengers travelling to and from Cardiff via Iceland to prolong their layover into a multi-day stopover in Iceland for no additional cost, for up to 10 days.

The airline keeps fares low through a “pay-for-what-you-need model.”

A personal item is included for the flight, and passengers can choose which upgrades they need for their trip, such as an in-flight meal, carry-on, checked bag, special bags for items such as golf sets, skis, strollers, and musical instruments, seats with extra legroom, cancellation protection and more.
