Long-time burger restaurant leaves Mississauga, lands in Oakville

For more than a decade, the large Five Guys sign stood as a community marker at Erin Mills Parkway and The Collegeway in Mississauga.

The sign is gone, and so is Five Guys.

The fast-casual burger restaurant that had been located in the outer area of South Common Mall closed at the beginning of November, leaving a void in the dining habits of many who are still driving up to the storefront only to find the doors locked and the windows papered over.

“Oh, this is not good. Not good at all,” said Jake McTeer, who walked up looking for a burger and fries earlier this week.

Despite a sign indicating its closure, McTeer still yanked on the door handle, hoping that it was all a big misunderstanding.

“I’ve been coming here for years, ever since high school; it was my go-to place,” he said.

But not to worry, Jake. Five Guys is making a return just a few kilometres away, albeit technically in Oakville.

The new store will be on the south side of Dundas Street at Winston Park Drive in the Best Buy plaza. It will occupy the spot vacated recently by Blaze Pizza. Remember, in that area, the south side of Dundas is in Oakville, while the north side is in Mississauga.

The new location is expected to open in December.

Although no official reason for the move has been given, the new space rests in a strip of stores that are also home to other food takeout places.

A chain with more than 1,500 stores worldwide, the new Five Guys store will be the first Oakville location.

The only Mississauga location for Five Guys is now at Heartland Town Centre at Mavis Road and Britannia Road (also in a Best Buy plaza).

Five Guys is famous for its made-to-order burgers, hot dogs, fries and classic shakes.
