As of Monday (July 20) there have been 884 cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton since the middle of March.

As of Monday (July 20) there have been 884 cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton since the middle of March.

This marks an 11-case increase since the City of Hamilton last reported COVID-19 numbers on Friday (July 13). Of these cases, 875 are confirmed and nine are considered probable.

Of the cases that have tested positive in the last 10 days, 10, or 38 per cent of them, have come from the 20 to 29 age group. In total, 177, or 20 per cent of local cases, of Hamilton residents in this age range have tested positive for the virus.

Hamilton’s death toll remains at 44, a number that has not changed for close to a month now.

There is one active outbreak of the virus at a local congregate facility where one staff member tested positive for the virus last week.

The community’s rate of resolved cases continues to hold steady at 92 per cent with 816 of Hamilton’s overall cases having been resolved so far.

The numbers show that there are currently fewer than 25 known active coronavirus cases in the community right now.

On Monday, Hamilton’s bylaw that requires residents to wear face-coverings in enclosed public spaces came into effect.

This means that, with some exceptions, all persons, including customers and/or visitors entering enclosed premises are required to wear a mask or face covering while in the enclosed space.

It was also announced Monday by Ontario Premier Doug Ford that Hamilton will be allowed to enter Stage 3 of reopening on Friday (July 24).

This means that gathering limits will increase to a maximum of 50 people indoors and a maximum of 100 people outdoors, with physical distancing in place.

Gathering limits do not apply to settings such as beaches, parks, restaurants and bars, but measures to enable physical distancing may limit capacity at any given time.

Regions in Stage 3 will be permitted to allow indoor drinking and dining with physical distancing measures in place. Fitness facilities, movie theatres, and casinos are also permitted to reopen.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 135 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death from the virus Monday.

The total number of cases now stands at 37,739, which includes a death toll of 2,752.

There are 33,513 cases marked as resolved, with 106 such cases reported Monday.

There have now been multiple days in a row where new cases have outpaced newly resolved cases.

The number of people in hospital, in intensive care and on a ventilator all rose in today’s report.

The Ministry of Health says it was able to complete more than 20,000 tests for COVID-19 in the previous day.
