There’s a beehive of activity going on in one Niagara-on-the-Lake wellness centre.

The first in Canada (and possibly still the only of its type), BY’s Apitherapy and Wellness Center (996 Concession 6 Rd Building 3) is completely dedicated to apitherapy.

So what is that? It’s a complimentary wellness therapy that uses products made by honeybees for medicinal purposes. These products include honey, beeswax, royal jelly, pollen, propolis, and bee venom.

While westerners are reluctant to try many alternatives therapies for pain and various illnesses, Europeans and those in the Far East believe that bee products such as propolis, pollen, bee venom, and royal jelly have been used effectively for women’s and men’s health for more than 1,000 years for a variety of health concerns.

Opened by owner Eduard Unger back in October 2020, he comes by his therapy methods through generations as his father and grandfather were beekeepers back in Paraguay.

After coming to Canada 50 years ago, Unger has somewhere in the neighbourhood of five million bees at his BY’s Honey Farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Recent studies through Loyalist College Applied Research and Innovation Centre for Natural Products have revealed that Canadian-made honey from BY’s Apitherapy Center had higher concentrations of the active ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide and pH levels which are essential in the provision of therapeutic health benefits.

These effects are due to honey’s anti-bacterial action, secondary to its high acidity, osmotic effect, antioxidant content and hydrogen peroxide content.

“Our goal is to provide a holistic approach to health and wellness, while following a functional model of healthcare, utilizing the power of nature,” says the company’s Facebook page. “These are all used by people for nutrition, immune system support, treatment of a variety of ailments, skin care, and healing of open wounds, as well as many chronic conditions.”

“At BY‘s Apitherapy Wellness Center, we combine the benefits of nature with an interdisciplinary team of clinical specialists to provide you with the most positive outcomes available.”
