A familiar Canadian store name is coming back.
Video game store EB Games Canada is set to return as Stephan Tetrault, a French-Canadian entrepreneur, has officially acquired Electronics Boutique Canada inc. also known as “GameStop Canada” from GameStop Global Holdings S.A.R.L., according to a press release from GameStop Canada.
Tetrault plans to relaunch the franchise as EB Games Canada—”a beloved and iconic name many Canadian gamers still associate with their earliest gaming experiences.”
EB Games Canada was rebranded to GameStop Canada in 2021. In the last few years, as GameStop struggled financially, many stores closed. The GameStop (previously EB Games) at 6045 Mavis Rd., at Heartland Town Centre closed in February, The GameStop (previously EB Games) at South Common Centre, 2150 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. closed in February 2024, and the Erin Mills Town Centre location closed on Dec. 10, 2023.
In late 2023, GameStop, a Texas-based company reported declining revenues as more people buy video games online. In 2024, amid reports of falling revenues, GameStop said it planned to wind down operations in Germany. In 2023, GameStop ended its operations in Ireland, Switzerland and Austria.
Tetrault wants to revitalize Canada’s gaming retail scene and bring a renewed focus to customer experience, collector culture, and the unique preferences of Canadian gamers.
“This isn’t just a business decision—it’s about bringing something back that Canadians truly loved,” said Tetrault, now owner and CEO of the newly rebranded EB Games Canada in the release. “We’re going to build something special here, with community, nostalgia, and innovation at its heart.”
Plans for the revamped EB Games include enhanced in-store events, expanded product lines, deeper integration with pop culture brands, and a renewed focus on Canadians.
“We want EB Games Canada to be more than a store—we want it to be the hub for gaming and fandom culture across Canada,” said Jim Tyo, president, GameStop Canada. “This is about passion, and that’s what’s going to drive every decision we make.”
The transition to EB Games Canada will roll out nationwide over the coming months, including updated store signage, a redesigned website, and new branding across digital and social platforms.
There are GameStop locations in Mississauga (Square One Shopping Centre), Etobicoke, Oakville, Burlington, Durham Region and across Toronto.
